A year of Covid and internet learning

March 10, 2021. Almost a year since Covid affected us directly. The effect on us was much, much less than on many people, but it still has been a journey. For the most part, after we unexpectedly left our sailboat in Virginia, I have been investigating how to expand my business coaching and consulting business in the online world.

I plan to make some installments here which may be helpful to some people. They may even save some people many many hours and potentially thousands of dollars. I am using sociamonials to post this Briefly, I am 70 years old, have been in business for myself for over 40 years, and have created 6 successful (profitable) businesses. I have been mostly retired for the past 10 years, but have continued to provide coaching and consulting to one company throughout this time details can be found here.

A year of Covid and internet learning

So this post itself is an exercise in practicing some of the “lessons” I have spent time learning and spent money paying for. What has been by far the most striking highlights about my deep dive into internet marketing after about 10 years of paying only minor attention is just how deceptive and sleazy the whole thing has become. However, there is also a lot of goodness out there also. But you see, the thing is, we don’t have to be concerned about falling into or tripping over goodness. When that happens, it’s a good thing! Conversely, it could be worth being warned and cautious about “𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘧𝘧”.

I will wrap this up very soon, but what has occurred is that the “secrets of selling” or the psychological process that we are all subject to, but only very few people used to understand is now in the hands of tens of thousands of “marketers”, probably more like millions. So like fire, water and guns, these things can kill you or save your life. Just as it used to take a whole bunch of money to own a newspaper or TV station to “have a voice” in the world, today literally anyone with a phone and internet connections can say things that can be heard by thousands, or millions of people.

Whereas it used to take a wack of money to make an infomercial, now it just takes time. whereas it used to make money time and creativity to create “a product”, now you can just pretend to have a product and if the “infomercial” is good enough (that takes no money to make or publish), one can sell non-existent products to thousands of people. OK, this was my experiment for today. I will continue the saga of how I spend many months, and many thousands of dollars 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼.
